Butterfly Hill Nature Preschool

 

When adults are asked to close their eyes and imagine their favorite place as a child, most of them speak of a place outdoors. The children that attend Butterfly Hill will someday speak and reminisce of the real speed boat that was dug into the ground, the giant mud kitchen with all of the tools to create culinary mud delights, the grass tunnel to roll down or ride their bikes through and a large natural space to prowl in the grass or hunt for bugs.

Our outdoor classroom started fresh and beautiful several years ago and now has aged. The logs may be full of moss, the trees have grown a little taller, the grass is worn in spots and the neighbors probably think they live next to a junkyard. But, the imagination, wonder, discovery and inquiry that takes place in the minds of the little children that inhabit the space make us believe that things get better with age-and with a little dirt. After all, if you didn’t get dirty, you didn’t play.
