Harding University Partnership School

We have thoroughly enjoyed our Nature Explore Classroom throughout the past year, and it continues to be one of the most loved and impactful spaces on our campus. Used daily, the outdoor classroom has become a hub for student engagement, creativity, and connection to nature.

One of this year’s most exciting additions was the mud kitchen, which has quickly become a fan favorite during warmer weather. Watching small groups of students gather to create mud pies is both charming and inspiring. These moments reflect interactive, imaginative play at its best. We have noticed a meaningful shift in outdoor play, from running and shouting to intentional, small-group choice play rich in conversation, collaboration, and creativity. Daily wonder found in nature now guides how students explore, communicate, and problem-solve together.

The Nature Explore Classroom consistently draws admiration from visitors. When families tour our school, it is often the outdoor classroom that prompts the biggest “oohs” and “aahs.” The space reflects our commitment to whole-child learning and offers a tangible example of how thoughtfully designed natural environments elevate student experience and engagement.

The classroom has also served as a beautiful backdrop for special school events. Our Kindergarten and 1st Grade musicals were especially charming, bringing families together in a joyful, natural setting and showcasing the versatility of the space as both a learning environment and a community gathering place.

This year, we hosted two beautification days supported by staff and families, reinforcing shared ownership and pride in the space. As part of our commitment to sustainability and long-term care, we installed a drip line irrigation system, eliminating the need for hand watering over the summer and ensuring the health of our plants year-round.

We are deeply grateful to our donors, Audacious Foundation and The Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara, whose generous support made continued development and care of the Nature Explore Classroom possible. Their investment has had a lasting impact on our students, families, and broader school community.

Overall, the Nature Explore Classroom continues to strengthen relationships, foster creativity, and support joyful learning. It is a place where students slow down, engage deeply, and connect with both the natural world and one another. We look forward to continuing to grow and nurture this special space in the years ahead.
