The Nature Explore Classroom at

Messiah Lutheran Child Care Center

Our Nature Explore Classroom is a vibrant, hands-on learning environment that inspires creativity, curiosity, and a love for the outdoors. We pride ourselves on providing a safe, inclusive, and natural space that fosters growth for children and community members alike.

Our classroom is uniquely designed with a blend of native plants, interactive learning stations, and sustainable materials. The layout encourages children to explore and interact with nature in meaningful ways, promoting cognitive, physical, and social development.

Since opening, our Nature Explore Classroom has welcomed many children and families. We have seen increased engagement, and more collaborative learning among participants. Visitors are greeted by a welcoming entryway adorned with student-created art. The space includes a sensory garden, natural building area, music and movement zone, and quiet reflection spots. Paths wind through flower beds and vegetable gardens, offering endless opportunities for exploration.

We are grateful for the tireless dedication of our staff, the generous support from Tobin Landscape & Design, and the O’Hara Family and the ongoing involvement of our volunteers. Special thanks to Richard Mosier, who contributed his time, expertise, and materials.

One child, who once hesitated to play outdoors, now leads group activities and helps care for our plants. A parent shared, “I see my child’s confidence blossom here every week.” Our volunteers often join in, sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm with young learners.

We extend heartfelt thanks to our volunteers, educators, and families for their unwavering commitment to the program. Your support makes our work possible, and we are grateful to have such a caring community.

Our school community plans to host a “Nature Walk-a-Thon,” supporting classroom maintenance and new materials. We also plan to host donation drives, and a “plant sale.” From leaf prints to collaborative murals, children’s artwork decorates our classroom and brings it to life. These creations inspire pride and mark their memorable learning experiences.

Our rainwater collection system, walnut tree umbrella, and sensory exploration path set our classroom apart, providing hands-on lessons in sustainability, ecology, and creativity.

“I feel happy every time I come here—there’s always something new to see or do!” —Student
“This space has brought our school community closer together.” —Parent
“The children have become stewards of the land.” —Volunteer

Highlights include our Fall Harvest Festival, Spring Planting Day, and Family Nature Nights. These events invite families and neighbors to celebrate and learn together. The Nature Explore Classroom has deepened relationships among families, supported staff professional development, and enhanced our reputation as a leader in outdoor early childhood education.

We are planning to expand our pollinator garden, introduce a composting station, and launch a series of nature workshops for caregivers and educators. Our ongoing planting projects involve children and volunteers in tending to our edible and ornamental gardens. We grow seasonal crops, observe pollinators, and learn about every stage of plant life.

We are planning bi-weekly community clean-up days fostering a sense of pride and ownership. Families, staff, and volunteers work together to keep our space safe, beautiful, and thriving for years to come.
