The Nature Explore Classroom at

New Horizon Academy – Lakeville Dodd

At New Horizon Academy, we believe that nature is not just a backdrop—it’s an essential part of a child’s learning environment. Our Outdoor Classroom is a thoughtfully designed space that invites children to explore, create, and connect with the natural world every single day. Our outdoor classroom, surrounded by trees and plants, is a peaceful and beautiful space that inspires creativity, curiosity, and joy.

One of the standout features of our classroom is the intentional integration of natural elements. From the “Dirt Digging” area nestled among trees to grassy areas dedicated to music and movement, each space embraces natural materials and textures. We use real wood, stones, and mulch to make the space feel natural and beautiful. The sensory play and gardening areas encourage hands-on discovery while helping children build an appreciation for nature.
Durability and low maintenance were key priorities throughout our design process. We selected weather-resistant materials, such as sealed wood, metal fixtures, and rubber mulch surfacing. These elements allow children to fully engage in messy play and exploration, while keeping upkeep manageable for staff. Our design ensures clear visibility and defined boundaries, which support both safety and supervision.

Our space is designed with intention, both functionally and aesthetically. Each learning area from building and sensory play to water exploration and music is clearly labeled with hand-crafted wooden signs, adding an earthy and unique charm. Visual clarity is maintained through organized storage and simple, clean layouts. We’ve prioritized open-ended materials and play structures that allow children to direct their own experiences, whether they’re pouring, digging, stacking, or making music.

What makes our classroom truly special is the deep involvement of our leadership team in its creation. Our Director and Assistant Director personally designed and built most of the components from scratch. From constructing the tables and art stations to hand-painting signs and organizing the layout, our hands-on dedication brought our classroom to life. Every element reflects our passion for creating a space that aligns with our educational philosophy and supports the developmental needs of every child.

We are especially proud of the impact our outdoor classroom has had on our school community. Teachers report increased focus and cooperation among students after outdoor time. Families have expressed appreciation for the natural, calming environment that promotes both learning and well-being. Children are more engaged, confident, and excited to explore, especially those who may not thrive in more traditional indoor settings.
