The Nature Explore Classroom at

Northridge Early Education Center

Northridge EEC has transformed sections of our outdoor space into a dynamic, child-led learning environment, incorporating elements such as a mud pit, natural building materials, loose parts, a garden, and shaded quiet corners. The children have become stewards of the space, planting flowers and vegetables, building with logs and rocks, and observing wildlife throughout the seasons.

We incorporated children’s ideas in the development of the outdoor classroom lessons and activities.
They give input on what they want to see. This creates a deep sense of ownership and pride. We noticed improvements in their social emotional development as they built on their skills, confidence, and physical development, along with a greater respect for the environment.

Staff engagement was equally important. On-going professional development is provided to staff to
discuss outdoor learning philosophies and safety practices. As a result, staff became more comfortable and enthusiastic about outdoor learning, integrating literacy, math, and science into natural play experiences.
