The Nature Explore Classroom at
Northstar Preschool St. George
Canyon Climbers
It started with watching the children through the window, stuck in their work books. They were learning, but the laughter had grown quieter. The spark of curiosity seemed to be dimming.
Then one spring morning, a teacher noticed something different. A small group had wandered to the old chicken coop, faces pressed against the wire, utterly captivated.
“Why do their feet look like that?”
“Where do they sleep?”
The questions tumbled out, alive with wonder. Standing on that gravel playground, it clicked into place. This was what had been missing, not another homework sheet, but dirt under fingernails and the simple mystery of another living creature.

The playground wasn’t much; gravel, a few toys, and that weathered chicken coop. But what if it could become something more? They started small. Raised beds for planting. A nature observation station. More time outside, letting children lead the way. Something remarkable happened. The child who couldn’t sit still spent an hour studying a caterpillar. The shy one narrated stories about the chickens. Children who seemed disengaged suddenly had a thousand questions about the world around them.
They were coming back to themselves. Technology and Worksheets had its place, but these children needed connection to the living world, to seasons and growth.
From that gravel playground and humble chicken coop, the Nature Explorer Classroom was born. A place where learning happens in the cool weight of a stone, the smell of rain-wet earth, the gentle responsibility of caring for creatures who depend on them. The chickens still scratch in their coop. But now children gather around them not just to watch, but to belong.
