Opportunity School-Edwards Campus Outdoor Classrooms

Our Nature Explore Classroom continues to be an amazing addition to our Opportunity School campus, providing children with daily opportunities to explore, create, and connect with nature. One of our teachers shared that the outdoor classrooms gives children “an experience with nature that was common when we were little, but that many children rarely get anymore.” Teachers help maintain the space each day, ensuring it remains inviting, safe, and filled with natural materials that encourage discovery.

This year, we’ve focused on deepening our staff’s understanding of outdoor learning and are excited to welcome Jena Jauchius from “N is for Nature Play” to provide training on how outdoor play supports children’s sensory and emotional regulation.

A new addition we’re proud to highlight is a sensory path being added to one of our outdoor areas. The path will include a variety of stations—such as a stomping path, “pebble harp,” heavy work zone, and calming bench—that support children in regulating their emotions through movement and reflection.

As we look ahead, we remain committed to nurturing and expanding our Nature Explore spaces, strengthening staff confidence in nature-based teaching, and engaging families in the joy of outdoor learning. Our goal is to ensure that every child at Opportunity School continues to experience the peace, curiosity, and connection that nature can provide.
