The Nature Explore Classroom at

Palms Day School

At Palms Day School, we believe the environment is a powerful teacher, and our Nature Explore Classroom is a living example of that philosophy. Rooted in Reggio-inspired principles, the space was designed with children at the center, blending natural beauty, intentionality, and opportunities for discovery in every corner. What makes our outdoor classroom truly special is the way it reflects both our region and our community, while giving children the freedom to explore, imagine, and grow.

Our Nature Explore Classroom is not simply an outdoor play area; it is an extension of our learning studios. Trees, gardens, and natural pathways invite children to engage all their senses. They climb, balance, and build in areas that encourage gross motor development, while also finding quiet nooks for reflection, storytelling, or sketching. Live plants, seasonal collections, and natural building materials ensure that the space is ever-changing, encouraging children to notice patterns, cycles, and connections in the natural world.

One of the most unique aspects of our space is how it evolves with the ideas of the children. Each year, children contribute to its design and use—whether by planting vegetables in our garden beds, creating art with natural materials, or collecting treasures from nature walks to add to our outdoor displays. This shared ownership fosters pride, responsibility, and a deep sense of connection. Families are also invited to participate through gardening days, seasonal celebrations, and outdoor projects, which helps extend the learning community beyond the classroom walls.

Durability and sustainability were priorities in our design. We chose natural, long-lasting materials—wood, stone, and native plants—that reflect our regional environment and can withstand daily exploration. The layout balances open-ended play spaces with areas of organization and clarity, ensuring the classroom feels beautiful, welcoming, and purposeful. The result is an environment that is both low-maintenance and endlessly inspiring.

What makes our Nature Explore Classroom truly special, however, is the joy and creativity it sparks. On any given day, you might see a group of children constructing a fort from branches, another sketching leaves in their nature journals, and others simply lying in the grass, watching clouds drift by. These experiences foster not only physical and cognitive development but also wonder, mindfulness, and a lifelong appreciation for the natural world.

At Palms Day School, our Nature Explore Classroom is more than a space—it is a reflection of our values. It embodies our belief that children learn best when surrounded by beauty, engaged with nature, and given the freedom to explore. It is a place where childhood is honored, curiosity is nurtured, and joy is always present.
