Infant/Toddler & Preschool

At The Piper Center for Family Studies and Child Development at Baylor University, we utilize four unique outdoor spaces in our Reggio Emilia- inspired laboratory program.

In our multi-use Welcome Garden, you might find non-mobile infants laying on a blanket, an educator having lunch, or a pair of preschool classes meeting together to plan their day.

Our Infant/Toddler Outdoor Classroom is specifically geared toward sensorimotor development and features a winding path for riding bikes or rolling balls and a gentle slope where children and educators enjoy digging in dirt and looking for bugs.

Our Preschool Outdoor Classroom includes opportunities to climb and slide, a central deck for creative arts and reading books, plenty of open space to run and play, a canopy of hundred-year-old oak trees, and a view of vibrant downtown Waco.

Finally, our Field is open for exploration by any group of children, and tends to house long-term investigations. Children frequently build extensive forts and obstacle courses, invent dramatic play scenes in the mud kitchen, care for plants in raised garden beds, and create in-depth plans for exploration alongside their teachers.
