The Nature Explore Classroom at

Windy Willow Preschool

At our preschool, we believe that children thrive when they are given the freedom to explore, wonder, and lead their own learning. Our entire program is built on a child-led, nature-based philosophy, where curiosity drives the day and meaningful learning happens through hands-on experiences—both indoors and out.

Our outdoor spaces are natural extensions of the classroom. Designed with intention, it offers children the freedom to move, build, pretend, observe, and connect—with nature, their peers, and themselves. The environment supports a wide range of needs and interests, providing both open-ended materials for active play and quieter, more focused areas for reflection and care.

Whether children are digging in the dirt, creating imaginary worlds, or quietly watching a bug make its way across a leaf, they are engaging in experiences that support the development of physical coordination, emotional regulation, problem-solving, and creativity. Every part of the space invites exploration and offers opportunities for both independence and collaboration.

A newly added fenced-in garden area features raised beds, natural materials, and cozy nooks—encouraging children to slow down, get curious, and connect with the rhythms of the living world. Just beyond the playground, we also have access to a nearby field, mud garden, and small wooded area. These spaces offer endless opportunities for adventure, discovery, and meaningful connection to the outdoors.

We know that outdoor play isn’t just good for children—it’s essential. It supports gross and fine motor development, nurtures social-emotional growth, and enhances cognitive skills through real-world experiences. Time spent in nature helps children build resilience, focus, and a sense of wonder they carry with them long after the day ends.

At our school, nature isn’t a break from learning—it is learning. Whether indoors or outside, we offer children the space, support, and freedom to grow into confident, capable, and connected people—rooted in joy and curiosity.
