My outdoor classroom is well loved by the children and their parents. Maintenance is fairly easy, clean up in the fall and spreading new mulch and bringing in new plants each spring. We also plant new herbs and vegetables in raised containers each spring. This year we tried sweet potatoes for the first time. We were all excited to see how they grew. In the fall, the children were able to discover exactly how each plant produced many potatoes under the dirt from the roots. Then we roasted them for everyone to enjoy for lunch.
The children also really enjoy looking for worms and bugs and playing with the water table. One new addition this year was a small storage garage for the cars and wheeled toys. When it’s time to go inside, we can now store them in the garage. This protects them from the elements and also keeps the backyard looking nice and natural when they’re not in use.
